Silver Cove RV Resort

Our maiden voyage in our new Cougar trailer was to Silver Cove RV Resort, just east of Castle Rock, WA. We were greeted by a very nice man in the office (who had a dog behind the counter, which also makes him a very smart man). He checked us in, we drove to our spot, parked the trailer, and got it all set up just in time for the air conditioner to break in 85 degree weather.

After a long, hot discussion my humans decided to brave the heat, since the next few days were supposed to drop into the mid-70’s. Glad we stuck it out because Silver Cove turned out to be a busy dog’s paradise.

Canals from nearby Silver Lake allow campers to go boating and fishing and kayaking right from the shores of their campsites. There were lots of open spaces for a dog to run free and chase sticks and geese and squirrels. Every area was spotless (except for the duck poop), there were fire rings, a huge club house, several smaller rental facilities, a Frolf course, a playground, laundry room, bath house, and tons of well-kept cabins. Everyone was friendly, quiet, having fun, nice to all the dogs, and no cats. Not even one.

The nearby town of Castle Rock (only 10 miles from the campground) has a Riverfront Trail that shouldn’t be missed. Park at the trailhead, walk along the paved path, go past the Dog Park on the left and the Bike Skills Park on the right, until you reach the sandy beach down by the Cowlitz River. You’ll have to follow along a trail to get down to the water, but it’s worth it—trust me!

There are three more places your dog will enjoy. All of them can be reached traveling east along the Spirit Lake Highway: the Forest Learning Center, the Coldwater Lake Trailhead, and the Science and Learning Center where you can get a great view of Mt. St. Helens (if it isn’t cloudy like when we were there).

All three of these sites feature paved walking trails that wind through fields and trees and stunning water views. Quiet enough for a dog to get off her leash and stretch her legs.

The only downside was having to sit in the truck while my humans toured the facilities. No Dogs Allowed should be outlawed once and for all! It’s undoubtedly the fault of those Cat People, who should also be outlawed.

In spite of the stay-in-the-truck-and-don’t-bark thing, I give our first travel adventure Five Paws.
